The Tailor

Abdul Lateef Alaka started out as an apprentice, learning how to measure, cut, and create clothes for men and women. Having mastered his trade, he’s now an employer and mentor to a new generation of skilled workers – and unlike most other Nigerian masters, he doesn’t charge his students to learn under him.

To buy cloth and other materials in bulk, Abdul has taken loans from one of our partners, Accion Microfinance Bank. The loans have helped him increase his profits, which he keeps in a newly opened savings account. When his students graduate, they receive a sewing machine from their former teacher.
